Material: Swedish Black and Impala Granite — Why It Matters
Not every black stone is granite. The market is full of cheaper "granites" — actually diabase, basalt or chemically blackened marble — which after 3–5 years on a cemetery start to flake, fade or crack from frost. Our granite gravestone tablets are made exclusively from natural Swedish Black or Impala granite.
These specific varieties are characterised by:
- Zero moisture absorption — water cannot penetrate the structure, so frost cannot cause cracking
- Deep, uniform black colour — the perfect "negative" for diamond engraving (the portrait literally "appears" against the dark background)
- Mirror-polished surface — the plaque looks prestigious even after 20 years
- UV and acid rain resistance — no fading, no moss penetration, no chemical degradation
Diamond Needle Engraving vs Laser — The Truth About Portrait Durability
The most common question from our customers: "Will the portrait disappear after a few years?" The answer depends entirely on the technique. Most cheap online offers use laser engraving — the laser merely thermally burns the stone surface, changing its colour. It's fast and cheap, but the portrait greyes and loses contrast within a few seasons.
We use exclusively diamond needle engraving. A precisely controlled head with a diamond blade physically strikes microscopic points into the granite structure — deeply, permanently, irreversibly. Every line of a face, every shadow, every gleam in an eye becomes an integral part of the stone itself. This is craftsmanship with photographic precision and durability counted in generations, not seasons.
🛠️ How to Install a Granite Gravestone Tablet
- Choose the location and clean the surface: Find a flat, level or slightly inclined spot on the gravestone. Degrease it with acetone or isopropyl alcohol — no adhesive will bond well to a dirty or greasy surface.
- Apply stone silicone at specific points: Apply stonemasonry silicone (e.g. Soudal Stone or equivalent, available at any DIY store) at the 4 corners and in the centre of the tablet. Do not cover the entire surface — leave space for moisture to escape.
- Add spacer tape (optional but recommended): Between the silicone points, place thin spacer tape (2–3 mm thick). This creates a gap between the tablet and the gravestone through which water can freely drain. It prevents water stains and mould on the polished surface.
- Press firmly for 60 seconds: Position the tablet precisely (check with a spirit level!) and apply even pressure for one minute. Silicone begins to grip after 10–15 minutes and reaches full strength after 24 hours.
- For larger tablets (50×40 cm and above) — consider a supporting wedge: A granite wedge lifts the back of the tablet by 5–7 cm, creating a natural slope for rainwater. This prevents water pooling, moss and dust accumulation at the base. The wedge is priced individually — contact us for a quote.

❓ How long does production take and when will my tablet arrive?
Once you have approved the free digital visualisation, we dispatch the tablet within 3 to 7 working days. Add 1–3 days for courier delivery to EU countries. In total, the tablet typically arrives within 5–10 working days of approving the design. In exceptional cases (e.g. a complex photograph requiring extensive editing), the time may be slightly longer — we always inform you in advance.
❓ How do I send the photo for the portrait?
After placing your order, send us the photo and inscription text to firma@cempulik.eu. Any digital format is accepted (JPG, PNG, PDF). The higher the resolution and the clearer the facial contrast, the better the engraving result. If you only have a physical printed photograph, you can send it by post and we will scan it free of charge.
❓ Is the tablet frost-resistant for cemetery conditions?
Yes — Swedish Black and Impala granite, from which our tablets are made, has zero moisture absorption. Water cannot penetrate the stone structure, so there is nothing to freeze and cause cracking. Our tablets are fully frost-resistant and designed for year-round outdoor exposure in Central European climates.
❓ Can I order a custom size?
Yes. We offer 10 standard size variants (from 20×15 to 60×60 cm), but we can cut granite to any custom dimensions if none of the standard sizes match your gravestone. Custom sizes are priced individually — please contact us via the order form or by phone.
❓ What does the price include — is the visualisation free?
The digital visualisation is completely free and is standard with every order. You will receive the design within 24 hours of sending us the materials. We only begin work on the stone after your written approval of the design. The price also includes: portrait engraving, sandblasting and painting of inscriptions (gold/silver), standard protective packaging and courier delivery.
❓ Will the gold inscription fade?
We use specialist UV-resistant stonemasonry paints specifically designed for granite memorials. The inscriptions are first deep-sandblasted (recessed into the stone), and the paint fills these recesses, protected from abrasion by the stone walls around it. Unlike ordinary varnishes, these paints do not fade in sunlight or rain for at least 10–15 years. If a colour refresh is ever needed, we can carry it out without replacing the tablet.
❓ How do I clean the granite tablet on the gravestone?
Use clean water or water with a small amount of mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid aggressive chemicals (acids, bleach, chlorine) and abrasive scrubbers, which can scratch the mirror-polished surface. A gentle clean once a season is sufficient to keep the tablet looking new for many years.
