Granite Memorial Papyrus with Photo — Portrait in Black Granite
A granite papyrus with a photo is one of the most expressive and durable memorial elements you can place on a gravestone. The scroll shape with carved edges imitating a rolled parchment gives the piece timeless elegance and sets it clearly apart from standard memorial tablets.
Black Swedish Granite (Mirror Black) with mirror polish provides the perfect backdrop for a portrait and inscription — the deep black brings out every detail of the image, while the polish ensures the stone retains its original shine for decades without any maintenance. With water absorption below 0.1%, this granite is fully resistant to frost, moisture, and UV.
The edges of the papyrus are carved in the shape of a parchment roll — this distinctive motif makes the product immediately recognisable as a symbolic scroll carrying a final message. Inscriptions made by deep sandblasting (2–3 mm recesses) are permanently filled with UV- and frost-resistant gold or silver paint.
Three Photo Options — Diamond Engraving, Photo Crystal, Porcelain
Diamond engraving (in granite): The photo is engraved directly into the stone surface using a precision diamond milling machine. The result is a monochrome high-resolution portrait as durable as the granite itself — no risk of falling off, fading, or frost damage. The most durable and prestigious option, permanently part of the stone.
Photo crystal: A colour photo is fused into a special ceramic-glass tile, fitted into a recessed slot in the papyrus. UV- and moisture-resistant. Ideal when colour reproduction of the photograph matters most.
Memorial porcelain: A classic oval or rectangular porcelain tile with a fired photo, mounted in a prepared recess. A traditional technique used in stonemasonry for decades, proven and available in many formats.

🛠️ How to Install the Memorial Papyrus — Step by Step
- Contact us and send your photo — send a portrait image (min. 300 dpi, plain background, face clearly cropped), choose papyrus size and photo technique. Within 2–3 working days you will receive a design proof for approval.
- Approve design and pay deposit — after approval we take a 50% deposit. Production takes 5-10 business days (depending on project complexity).
- Prepare the gravestone surface — clean and degrease the mounting area (min. 45×35 cm). Remove moss, dust, and old adhesive residue.
- Apply stone silicone and spacer tape — attach 3–5 mm spacer tape around the papyrus base perimeter, then apply stone-grade silicone (not construction silicone) in a zigzag pattern on the base. Two people are required due to the ~18 kg weight. Press firmly and leave for 24–48 hours to cure.
- Optional: granite wedge stand — for a 15–20° tilt, use the granite wedge stand. It improves aesthetics, helps rainwater run off the surface, and makes the inscription easier to read.
Who Is This Papyrus For?
This product is ideal for families who want to place a portrait of a loved one on the gravestone in a durable, monumental form. Particularly suited when:
- You want to combine an inscription (dates, epitaph, name) with an image in one cohesive stone element.
- Durability matters — diamond engraving in granite is indestructible and requires no maintenance for the lifetime of the gravestone.
- You are looking for something original that stands out from standard memorial tablets — the papyrus scroll form carries symbolic meaning.
- The gravestone is already in place and you need an additional element that can be added without altering the existing stone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the photo papyrus (#2502) and the inscription papyrus (#139)?
Papyrus #2502 (this product) includes a portrait — produced by diamond engraving, photo crystal, or memorial porcelain. For those who want to combine a photo with an inscription. Price from 1000 PLN.
Papyrus #139 is an inscription-only version — no photo, but with an extended epitaph, religious symbol, or floral decoration. Minimalist and available from 600 PLN. If you need only text or wish to keep costs lower, choose #139.
Which photo technique is most durable?
Diamond engraving directly in the granite is the most durable — it is part of the stone and cannot fall off or fade over the lifetime of the gravestone. Photo crystal is UV- and frost-resistant but as an embedded element carries a small risk of cracking on hard impact. Memorial porcelain is a proven technique but requires periodic checks of the mounting adhesive every few years.
Can I order a custom size?
We offer two standard variants: 40×30×5 cm and 45×35×5 cm. Other dimensions are available on individual order — contact us before ordering with your required measurements. Custom pricing and lead times apply.
How should I prepare the photo for diamond engraving?
The ideal photo for engraving is a portrait with a clear face, contrasting background (plain, preferably light), resolution minimum 300 dpi. Avoid group photos — the portrait must be cropped to one person. Even modern smartphone photos are often sufficient — consult us before ordering and our graphic designer will assess the quality.
How long does production take?
Production takes 5-10 business days (depending on project complexity) from design approval and deposit payment. Add 2–3 days for courier delivery. During peak season (May–August) the lead time may extend to 3 weeks — order in advance, especially before important dates.
Is the inscription durable in harsh winter conditions?
Yes. Inscriptions made by deep sandblasting (2–3 mm recesses) are filled with stone-grade paint resistant to UV, frost, and moisture. Black Swedish Granite is one of the most frost-resistant materials used in memorial stonemasonry — water absorption below 0.1% means water barely penetrates the stone structure.
Can the papyrus be self-installed?
Yes, self-installation is possible, but two people are needed due to the ~18 kg weight. Use stone silicone (not construction silicone) and 3–5 mm spacer tape. Clean and degrease the surface. Curing time: 24–48 hours — do not load the papyrus during this time. Optionally use the granite wedge stand for a 15–20° tilt.
Can the papyrus be mounted on any type of gravestone?
The papyrus can be glued to granite, marble, concrete, or terrazzo gravestones. The only requirement is a flat, clean surface of at least 45×35 cm (for 40×30 variant) or 50×40 cm (for 45×35 variant). We do not recommend mounting on sandstone or other porous materials without consulting a stonemason.
Can I order the papyrus with inscription only, without a photo?
If you want a papyrus without a photo, the better and more economical choice is the personalised inscription papyrus (from 600 PLN). This product (#2502) is priced and optimised for the combination of inscription and portrait.
